Cynthia Greenburg-Dunlop
Marriage & Family Therapist, AMFT #131801

When life gets hard it's important to be able to talk to someone who will really listen and is there to understand. Whatever is going on for you, being in therapy with a person dedicated to you and your experience is a great step towards a life that feels more gratifying, enriching... a life that feels like your own.
I'm a Marriage and Family Therapist whose approach to therapy combines doing deep work that:
•Inspires positive growth in your life
•Helps to assess the external and internal factors that might be more manageable than you think
•Increases your mindfulness to develop awareness regarding your patterns
•And works with you so you gain the self-knowledge needed to take actions that better match your values
**Anticipatory Grief Group in Anticipation of the Holidays will be starting up on Tuesdays, beginning 11/14/23, at 6pm in person, in Old Town Pasadena. If your loved one or close friend is suffering from a debilitating disease and/or a fatal prognosis, the holiday season can be extra difficult. This group is a place to talk about that experience, get support, and learn tools to navigate this challenging time. Contact Cynthia at 323.579.1730 or email cynthiagreenburgdunlop@gmail.com for more information. You do not have to do this alone! **
Special Areas of Interest:
Grief
Losing someone you love can feel heavy and it can be isolating. The painful process of grief contains anguish, anger, confusion, and profound sadness. With me, you get to have time that is just for you -- a safe space to remember, to explain, to tell your story and theirs. Within the grief process, with the pain there also can be beauty, poignancy, growth, humor and the potential for a deeper understanding of life and your purpose moving forward. Even though it's different now, and this loss will always matter, you can feel good again. It is amazing what can happen when you feel heard.
Couples
"Change is inevitable, growth is optional."
The truth is we change within our relationships. Over and over and over again. So yes, growth is optional, but in order for you to want to exercise that option you need to know why you should grow and if so, you want to know how. That's where a therapist comes in.
There are many reasons to seek couples counseling. You might be angry at your partner or lonely in your relationship. Maybe you feel let down, disappointed, hurt. Perhaps you both approach parenting differently or you're dealing with the stress of trying to get pregnant. Maybe someone stepped outside the partnership and you don't know if your relationship can survive it. Whatever is bringing you in at this point, it does help to have a therapist listen, find out what's going on, and help you feel that there is a better reality for your relationship. I not only offer skills and tools that can help change patterns and shift perspectives, I offer a place where you have the opportunity to really feel heard and try to understand each other better. I work with a diverse clientele and see couples who one or both of whom are in recovery (12-step or otherwise), in addition to those who identify as queer, part of the LGBTQI community, and who are heteronormative.
Trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy, 4-Day Externship led by Silvina Irwin and Michael Barnett
Writers and Artists
The challenge of being creative, especially if that is what you've also chosen as a career, can be intense. Maybe you're a freelancer which can entail an incredible amount of activating demands. Or you're on staff but feel stuck. You might be working on a project that is bringing up stuff for you and you want to process it. When you get right down to it, as a writer, an artist -- as a creator, you're dealing with a lot: interpersonal relationships, navigating business decisions, time management, self-care, financial stress, dating/marriage strain, frustration with your process, the lulls in employment, the highs and the lows of external validation... Being creative effects anything and everything in beautiful ways and in hard ways. How you get to take care of yourself, be heard, and feel more understood is where I come in. I'm here to support, to listen, and to offer perspective shifts and practical tools that have the potential to not only help you feel better but hopefully to thrive. *Walking and Talking therapy sessions now available.
Tweens and Teens
You're worried, concerned, maybe exasperated: Tweens and teens navigate a lot and perhaps you're not able to get in there and help in the ways you wish you could. I get that. You're privy to some but not all that's coming their way and that can be really frustrating, scary even. There are friendship problems, academic challenges, sibling disputes, grief and loss, social media influences, sexual pressures and identity issues, drugs, the pandemic, not to mention a future that to them may not look very bright. Their feelings are big, and how tweens and teens deal with it, as they straddle that area between kid and adult, can be a lot to shoulder for them and for you. Just having an unbiased, non-judgmental person whose sole job it is to listen can make a real difference in a young person's life. The work I do can help them navigate that long list of things that makes this time in their lives really hard. Improvements in their attitude, self-concept, and their way of interacting with friends, the world, and of course, with you, is possible. I see tweens and teens in-person or online and would be happy to give you a free consultation to see if I am the right fit.
